Former Fellow, Transitioned Outside of the Program

Fellow - Cancer Research Training Award Fellow
Former Organization:

Devlon N. Jackson was a Health Communications Intern Fellow in the Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch (HCIRB) within the Behavioral Research Program (BRP) of Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS). She recently earned her PhD in Communications and Culture from Howard University and received her Masters of Public Health degree from Florida International University. She also earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Organizational Communications from the University of Central Florida.

Devlon was interested in the shared decision-making process in patient-provider-communication and determining effective strategies that may contribute to reducing cancer disparities. She was especially interested in populations that are significantly impacted by cancer diagnosis and understanding how these patients, their health care providers, and their social support make decisions regarding their healthcare. Devlon's doctoral dissertation assessed the current state of shared decision-making among Black men and their health care providers regarding prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing. In addition to the shared decision-making process, she was also interested in determining additional facilitators such as social media, etc. and barriers that may attribute to the quality of patient-centered communication.

During her internship, Devlon worked with Sylvia Chou and April Oh on multiple projects related to social media/online communication, health literacy, health disparities, public health communication in relation to obesity, and patient-provider communication.
