Grantee: Bonnie A. McGregor

Bonnie A. McGregor
- Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
NCI grantees, Drs. Bonnie McGregor and Susan Lutgendorf have teamed up to develop and test a next- generation wellness program to reduce stress and improve the lives of cancer survivors. Along with Dr. Janine Gauthier, the team used crowdfunding to broaden their reach and set up a campaign to raise research funds.
"The coolest thing about the project for me was the emotional support I received as a result of this campaign," Dr. McGregor explained. "I have been humbled by the amazing generosity of my family, friends, colleagues, coworkers, and strangers."
Crowdfunding sites make it easy to set up a web page, tell a story, and state a fundraising goal. Then it's up to the researchers to spread the word through social media and global networks. Through the campaign and fundraising efforts, Dr. McGregor says she was able to increase visibility and make contact with the ovarian cancer community. "I feel emboldened by their support. I am looking forward to focusing on work with ovarian cancer survivors, with the always present goal of making wellness workshops like ours available to all cancer survivors."
