Nora Nock, Ph.D., P.E., is an associate professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Case Western Reserve University. Her passion is to help individuals affected by cancer and other chronic diseases, particularly those who do not innately "like" exercise, to experience some level of enjoyment and pleasure from exercise to propel them to improve their overall wellness and quality of life.
Her team is currently conducting a transdisciplinary randomized trial titled "Revving-Up Exercise for Sustained Weight Loss by Altering Neurological Reward and Drive," which is evaluating, for the first time, the efficacy of assisted compared to voluntary rate exercise, coupled with a group dietary behavioral program, in endometrial cancer survivors with obesity. The team hypothesizes that patients performing assisted rate exercise compared to those pedaling at their voluntary rates will have improved neurological stimulus in reward and motivation brain regions leading to enhanced exercise pleasure. They also hypothesize participants will have a concomitant decrease in food-related reward that may ultimately help to sustain weight loss.
The "ah-ha" moment that influenced my program of research the most was discovering that the ultimate underlying barrier to exercise is truly the lack of enjoyment from exercise and that a pivotal step in intrinsic behavior change will be to find ways to help patients experience pleasure from exercise.”
