Describe your scientific identity and research interests.
I am a geriatrician with health services and epidemiology training. I have been studying cancer and aging since 1986. A unique aspect of this body of research is the focus on the effects of cancer and its treatments on aging trajectories and domains of function and ability to perform daily tasks. Another novel aspect of this research program is the use of population-based research findings to drive basic discovery about cancer and aging in animal models, and to use mechanistic insights from the basic science laboratory to inform the next generation of clinically relevant population research studies, and address policy questions that follow from these discoveries.

Describe something that had a profound influence on your program of research or scientific interests (an "ah-ha!" moment).
I began my career as a family doctor working in neighborhood health centers in underserved communities. The turning point in my career from clinician to clinician researcher occurred on a job interview in an internal medicine department at a teaching hospital caring for a large population of older individuals. Having spent years delivering babies and doing office gynecology, I wanted to be able to teach the residents office gynecology. The deal was almost a no-go, when I was able to demonstrate to the chief of ambulatory care at a large hospital that gyn exams could be done in his internal medical clinics by pulling the stirrups out from the exam tables. He was astonished and never knew they were there. And so a research career in cancer and aging was born.

There have been no "ah-ha" moments guiding my research. Rather, my work has been based on persistence and intellectual curiosity.
