Cancer Research Training Award Fellow
Annie Beach, M.P.H., was a Cancer Research Training Award Fellow in the Tobacco Control Research Branch, working on Smokefree.gov. Ms. Beach's primary professional interest lies in developing evidence-based health narratives to promote behavior change among at-risk and vulnerable populations.
Ms. Beach earned a Master's in Public Health from The George Washington University (GW), studying Health Promotion and Prevention with a focus in Health Communication and Marketing. During her studies, she worked on communication campaigns across various public health topics, including postpartum depression, opioid addiction, LGBT mental health, and Type 2 diabetes.
Ms. Beach was part of a team at GW that developed, implemented, and evaluated a theoretically grounded mHealth text-messaging intervention that was designed to reduce the incidence of Type 2 diabetes among college students.
Prior to moving to D.C., Ms. Beach received her Bachelor of Science in Public Health from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She then served with City Year, an AmeriCorps program that allowed her to work as a tutor and mentor to wonderful and vibrant elementary/middle school students in her hometown of Boston, Massachusetts.

How has your BRP fellowship influenced your career?
The Cancer Research Training Award (CRTA) fellowship fostered an environment of professional and personal growth. The training, mentoring, and research opportunities I received allowed me to develop as a public health researcher, communicator, and innovator. Additionally, the fellowship served as an introduction to my current organization. While a fellow I collaborated with a team of contractors at ICF who supported BRP/TCRB's Smokefree.gov Initiative. Today, I continue to support Smokefree.gov and other public health initiatives at ICF with that same team of ICF'ers.
Describe a favorite memory or two from your fellowship experience.
When I was a fellow at NCI, I attended my first conference: SRNT in Baltimore. I was in my element, surrounded by research and the creative minds that produce, implement and communicate that research. It was such an enriching experience. I also completed my Master of Public Health with the support of my mentors and peers.
Describe your current position, your current organization, and what you do.
I am a Project Coordinator at ICF Next. I support several federal public health initiatives, including NCI's Smokefree.gov, NCI's Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program, and HHS's HIV.gov
