Meeting with community members about their fears and concerns about cancer made me recognize the importance of engaging the community early in the behavioral research process to reduce cancer health disparities.

Mira L. Katz, Ph.D., is a behavioral scientist who is interested in providing understandable and acceptable cancer prevention and control information to various populations. Her overarching research goal is to reduce cancer health disparities among minority and underserved populations. Dr. Katz has led research studies focused on increasing cancer screening and improving the uptake of the HPV vaccine. She uses community-engaged strategies in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of behavioral interventions. Dr. Katz pays special attention to providing cancer prevention and control information in formats that are understandable to individuals with limited health literacy skills so that they may make informed health decisions.

Dr. Katz's current study, "A Randomized Controlled Trial: Genetic Counseling Patient Preference Intervention via Electronic Health Record Portal vs. Conventional Genetic Counseling for Women at Elevated Risk for Breast Cancer," will be developed by engaging patients, health care professionals, and cancer genetic counselors. The theory-based intervention will be tested in a randomized controlled trial. Dr. Katz became interested in this field of research from discussions with colleagues and with the increased interest in genetic testing expressed by community members.
