Emily Tonorezos, M.D., M.P.H.
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Dr. Tonorezos is a general internist who cares for adult survivors of childhood cancer and survivors of adult cancer who received high-risk treatment. As an internist, she has focused her research on health concerns that are common to adult medicine: obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease. Interestingly, many of these problems are exacerbated or worsened following cancer therapy. However, whether the same mechanisms are at work â and whether survivors will respond to interventions â in the same way as the general population is not always known.
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common cancer of childhood. Over the past few decades, advances in treatment for childhood ALL have resulted in dramatic improvement in outcomes and a growing population of survivors. Yet, ALL survivors are at very high risk for obesity and a host of cardiometabolic diseases. Dr. Tonorezos is currently working on the "Exercise and QUality diet After Leukemia: the EQUAL Study," which aims to 1) test the effect of a remotely delivered diet and physical activity intervention on weight loss and cardiometabolic biomarkers among a nationwide sample of ALL survivors, and 2) identify the barriers and facilitators to weight loss in this setting.
