Randi E. Foraker

I am a Chronic Disease Researcher.

Randi E. Foraker, Ph.D., M.A.

Washington University in St. Louis

Through this work I realized that chronic diseases should not be treated in a vacuum, and that electronic health record-based tools could revolutionize survivorship care by allowing an oncologist to quickly assess survivor cardiovascular health and coordinate appropriate care.

Randi Foraker, PhD, is focused on applying epidemiology and informatics techniques to solve problems in the population health domain. Dr. Foraker specializes in the design of population-based studies and the integration of electronic health record data with socioeconomic indicators, and is well recognized in the field of cardiovascular disease epidemiology. Her recent research has focused on the application of clinical decision support to complement risk scoring in primary care, cardiology, and oncology.

Her current research evaluates an interventional approach to the use of electronic health records in order to address modifiable risk factors for disease and enable patient-centered decision making. The scientific premise of the current project is that by increasing patient and provider awareness of cardiovascular health and treatment-related cardiovascular risk, we can promote cardiovascular health and cardiotoxicity management during survivorship care, thereby reducing cardiovascular disease and cancer recurrence.

Prior work with this research team demonstrated that many cancer survivors have poorer cardiovascular health than the general population, compounding their susceptibility to cancer treatment-related toxicity and raising their risk of cardiovascular disease and related mortality. Epidemiologic and informatics expertise are needed to address these challenges, yet the impact of electronic health record-based cardiovascular health tools among cancer survivors is not known.
