I am a Cancer Epidemiology Researcher.

Valerie McCormack, PhD, MSc

International Agency for Research on Cancer

During every visit to Africa, I'm struck by the cultural, lifestyle, and environmental diversity and the massive expanse of countries. These lead to challenges for cancer diagnosis and treatment, but also to the most interesting studies on cancer aetiology.

Dr. McCormack is a scientist in the Environment and Lifestyle Epidemiology Branch at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), where she focusses on initiating cancer epidemiologic studies in LMICs. Her main research passion is cancer epidemiology in sub-Saharan African settings, especially for common but under-researched cancers with strong prospects of primary or secondary prevention. This work now includes the ABC-DO Breast Cancer Cohort (R01 funded) and the ESCCAPE case-control studies on esophageal cancer in East Africa.

The R01 funding to the ABC-DO breast cancer cohort has ensured the study's survival! ABC-DO is providing a strong evidence base to quantify the most efficient strategies to improve breast cancer survival in sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time it is providing a unique insight into African-specific issues in cancer, including treatment of breast cancer in HIV-positive women, survivorship , and the immense intergenerational consequences of breast cancer deaths.

Dr. McCormack is motivated by the desire to see the major advances in cancer survival and prevention, which many developed countries benefit from today, shared globally.
