Bradley J. Zebrack, Ph.D., M.S.W., M.P.H.

The emergence of new clinical care programs for AYAs and survivorship programs like First Descents, TeenCancerAmerican, and StupidCancer that specifically address the myriad and unique needs of AYAs inspires my program of research. Many of these programs have been established by AYA cancer survivors for the purpose of supporting other young people affected by cancer.

Brad Zebrack, PhD, MSW, MPH, is a former clinical social worker with experience in both pediatric and adult oncology, and now a professor of social work at the University of Michigan. He is passionate about research that addresses the supportive care needs of cancer patients and their families and informs age- and culturally relevant responses to those needs. As Research Director for the Michigan Medicine Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology program, Dr. Zebrack is collaborating in the development of a national infrastructure to facilitate investigator-initiated and collaborative research to advance the knowledge base as it relates to adolescents and young adults affected by cancer. His federally and foundation-funded research spanning 20+ years has examined and identified the prevalence of quality of life outcomes and psychosocial support needs for long-term cancer survivors, adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients, childhood cancer survivors, and their families, including the impact of cancer on coping, behavior, mental health outcomes, and social relationships. Dr. Zebrack's current work is geared toward understanding the ways in which the social determinants of health - the conditions in which people live, work, and play - get "under the skin" to affect disease progression and create disparities in those outcomes. Dr. Zebrack's interest in this field was, and still is, influenced by his own experience as a survivor of Hodgkin Lymphoma, diagnosed at the age of 25 years.
