Mayo Clinic Rochester

I became interested in thyroid cancer overdiagnosis after meeting a young lady with vocal cord paralysis who needed a tracheostomy after thyroid surgery for a small thyroid cancer found during unnecessary screening.

Dr. Brito is an Associate Professor of Medicine, endocrinologist, health care delivery researcher, Medical Director of the Mayo Clinic Shared Decision Making Center, and a Principal Investigator with the Knowledge and Evaluation Research (KER) Unit at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Brito is also the Quality Chair and innovation leader in the Division of Endocrinology at Mayo Clinic and a guideline methodologist for the Endocrine Society. He has authored over 190 peer-reviewed manuscripts. His research focuses on de-implementing unnecessary or harmful diagnostic tests, treatments, and procedures for patients with thyroid cancer, such as screening for thyroid cancer using thyroid ultrasound. This inappropriate use of ultrasound is an important driver of thyroid cancer overdiagnosis and overtreatment, which involves high-risk procedures and long-term therapeutics that cause medical, psychosocial, and financial hardships for patients. Dr. Brito's project comprehensively explores the multi-level factors driving inappropriate thyroid ultrasound and identifies strategies for de-implementation using natural language processing, machine learning, mixed methods, the Delphi process, and an implementation mapping approach.
