Ashley S. Felix

I am a Cancer Epidemiologist.

Ashley S. Felix, Ph.D., M.P.H.

Ohio State University

What I love most about epidemiology is that we use data to make an impact in the lives of people who need it the most. In my work as a cancer epidemiologist, I focus on understanding why cancer health disparities exist so that we can provide data-informed solutions to reduce the unequal cancer burden experienced by minoritized people. Our goal is to create healthier environments so that people can live their best lives.

Dr. Felix is a cancer epidemiologist with a research portfolio primarily focused on the etiologic, molecular, and prognostic heterogeneity of endometrial cancer. Her work has specifically focused on women diagnosed with clinically aggressive endometrial tumors, which represent a diverse and understudied group of tumors, characterized by racial disparities. In particular, Dr. Felix and her team explore determinants at the individual, provider, and structural levels that contribute to treatment and survival disparities. She translates her research to the classroom, where she teaches courses at the intersection of cancer epidemiology, racial disparities, and women's health. Through her R37 award, Dr. Felix will use the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare claims linked dataset and in-depth interviews of Black women with endometrial cancer and their providers to identify determinants of guideline-concordant treatment disparities. Endometrial cancer exhibits one of the worst racial disparities among all solid tumors, with Black women twice as likely as white women to die from the disease. This mortality gap is due, in part, to racial disparities in the receipt of guideline-concordant treatment. This research will identify the set of multilevel modifiable factors that can be targeted to reduce disparities and improve care for all women with endometrial cancer.
