When I was a kid, my grandparents motivated me to pursue a career in public health, although I had little understanding of what that really meant at that time. Years later, I realized that prevention is an essential tool for reducing disease burden, and reliable biomarkers are needed for precise cancer risk assessment. I then gradually developed my own research programs to study biomarkers and its application in cancer prevention.

Dr. Shu is an Assistant Attending Epidemiologist in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. His research aims to identify novel genetic and molecular markers for cancer risk using advanced genetics and omics tools. His recent work has identified unique genetic variations associated with risk of triple negative breast cancer and novel metabolite signatures for gastric cancer development.

The current NCI R37 aims to provide important evidence that circulating metabolome contains critical information to elucidate the etiology of gastric cancer. Through a global collaborative effort, Dr. Shu and his team will generate and harmonize untargeted and targeted metabolomics data using prediagnostic blood samples from multiple population-based prospective cohort studies. These data will be thoroughly investigated to develop novel signatures for gastric cancer risk and to discover intermediate phenotypes that reflect underlying mechanisms that link modifiable risk factors to this deadly malignancy.
